6 Great Reasons to visit Newquay and Cornwall this Autumn

Summer may be on the way out, but for those in the know autumn can be one of the very best times of the year to visit Cornwall. Why should that be? Well, the weather often stays mild, while all the best beaches and attractions tend to be much quieter.  Add some excellent events in and around Newquay, along with great activities and some of the best hotel deals of the year, and you can enjoy a cracking stay at great value. Here are six things we are especially looking forward to:

Surf's up (and big crowds are out!)

Surfing lessons Newquay Cornwall

For the keen surfer, autumn is also a great time to get out. Not only does the sea stay pretty mild through September and October, but whether you head north or south in Cornwall, the best surfing beaches are much less busy than they were in the school holidays. Explore the smaller, less famous locations and you might have your very own little slice of paradise for a couple of hours. Priceless! For those who'd like to learn without the pressure of massed onlookers, it's also prime time to book a surfing lesson with the likes of the Quicksilver Surf School (above).

Great days out (and less queueing!) at the best Cornish Attractions

6 Great Reasons to visit Newquay and Cornwall this Autumn

Fancy a trip to Newquay Zoo, Blue Reef Aquarium or one of our many beautiful gardens and National Trust sites? Now is the best time to visit at your own pace. As the fair weather guests depart, most of these attractions stay open and are keen to get your business with great deals and events! The Eden Project is under 20 miles away too, and it’s a fine time to treat yourself to a guided tour, a massage or even perhaps a short course to learn a new skill? See www.edenproject.com

A Feast of Cornish Food & Drink

Newquay Fish festival 2017

Of all the seasons of the year, autumn is probably the best of the lot for local produce. It’s an awesome time for seafood and the spoils of harvest. Not surprisingly then, it signals some of the best food and drink events in Newquay and the whole of Cornwall as the chefs get busy. For a great weekend of local flavours and talented chefs, look no further than Newquay Fish Fest 2017 (from Sept 8th-10th)! It’s rammed with tasty fare, star chefs and live entertainment! Find out more at www.newquayfishfestival.co.uk We’ll be keeping it fresh here at the Pentire too, with tasty autumn fare on our menus.

Catch some fishing action

6 Great Reasons to visit Newquay and Cornwall this Autumn

One of the most underrated sports of all in north Cornwall is the sea fishing! Once the roads quieten down and the swimmers and sun seekers thin out, it gets much easier to cast a line in peace and quiet. Nor is the sport inferior to summer. Now is the time to find the biggest mackerel and the best bass of the season (try night fishing on the rocky fringes of the town with a big bait)! Fish like wrasse also still feed well, as do a stack of mini species for those who like a spot of LRF or lure fishing. Alternatively, if you don’t know where to start, local fishing charter boats can provide all the gear and pretty much guarantee bites and action.

Find your Groove…

6 Great Reasons to visit Newquay and Cornwall this Autumn

Replacing the former hedonism of Newquay these days is a more cultured lineup of entertainment. There are a surprising amount of top gigs too. Lusty Glaze Beach is always worth a look for top live shows. The Lane Theatre is another good bet this autumn too, with appearances from acclaimed blues band The Producers (14th Oct) and top Pink Floyd tribute, Floyd in the Flesh (21st Oct).

Back with a bang!

Thundercat Racing Newquay

No roundup of what’s on in Cornwall this autumn would be complete without mentioning two of the region’s more explosive events! The Thundercat Racing National Championships (above) are always an adrenaline-fuelled blast, as speedboat teams battle for the honours. Or if you fancy an evening of big bangs, oohs and aahs, Flambards Fireworks Spectacular is less than an hour away heading south west of Newquay.
